The United States government has congratulated President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, following the official results announcement by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Madam Jean Mensah.
The United States also expressed its sincere congratulations to Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who became Ghana’s first female vice president-elect.
In a statement released and copied to Radiogoldlive.com, “the United States commends the Electoral Commission, as well as the nation’s security forces, civil society, and hundreds of thousands of poll workers, for ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process.”
The United States also praised outgoing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s polite acceptance of the election results, describing it as an example of the democratic spirit.
While the elections were mainly peaceful, the United States expressed alarm over sporadic acts of violence, which ac according to reports, resulted in at least four confirmed deaths.
In the statement, the United States expressed sympathy for the families affected and asked for a thorough inquiry to ensure responsibility for those involved.
The US reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a long-standing alliance with Ghana.
