Former Finance Minister Seth Terkper says Former President John Dramani Mahama saw infrastructure as key to the creation of sustainable jobs.
According to the former Finance minister the use of infrastructure to create jobs was deployed to full effect by the John Mahama administration after Ghana was forced to take up an IMF program to restore economic stability after headwinds in 2014.
The IMF program, Seth Terkper indicated required Ghana to implement a net freeze on employment into the public sector thus the government had to find a way to ensure unemployed Ghanaian youth get competitive employment.
In an interview with Sena Nombo on the Gold Morning Conversation, the former Finance Minister cited the Terminal 3 of the Kotoka International Airport and the expansion of Ghana’s ports are two infrastructural investments that have paid dividend in creating jobs.
Additionally, the John Mahama administration expanded many hospitals, built new hospitals and health centers, built the Accra Digital Center and embarked on the construction of Community Senior High Schools to give wings to its job creation agendas.
Hon. Seth Terkper also emphasized the role of cocoa roads in ensuring that food produced by Ghana’s food baskets were evacuated to key markets and not left to rot.
He said the construction of infrastructure has also proven to be a source of good paying short term employment.
The former Finance Minister also cited maintenance of infrastructure as a way of providing jobs.
