The Member of Parliament for Ada Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah has appealed to his colleagues to reject the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy as presented to Ghana’s legislature by the Finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
The budget has stirred controversy with loads of Ghanaian calling for its rejection because of the tax measures outlined in the document.
In a desperate move to increase revenue and win the favour of international investors who are losing interest in Ghana’s bonds, the Nana Akufo-Addo led administration is proposing to impose a 1.75% tax on electronic transactions including the heavily used Mobile Money platform and bank transfers.
The government is also reversing the discount it placed on benchmark values for some imports in 2019 at a time when shipping costs are driving importers out of business and increasing prices of goods on Ghana’s markets.
The Nana Akufo-Addo government also seeks to increase fees and charges paid for government services by 15%.
Contributing to the debate on the 2022 Budget laid before Parliament by the Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta, the Member of Parliament for Ada said the budget must not be approved.
She said the budget deserved to be dumped in the ‘dustbin, where it belonged’ thus called for its rejection.
Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah said the Finance Minister needs to be compelled to put together a new budget as the one before the house was not fit for purpose.
