His Majesty King Mswati III of Eswatini has called for a major shift in Africa’s trade dynamics, describing current levels of intra-African trade as “very limited” and urging nations across the continent to fully leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) for economic transformation.
Speaking during his ongoing four-day state visit to Ghana, the King emphasized the critical role of trade, infrastructure, and unity in unlocking Africa’s economic potential.
“Intra-African trade remains very limited. We must do more to trade among ourselves if we are to realize true economic independence,” said His Majesty.
“The African Continental Free Trade Area gives us the opportunity to open our borders for prosperity. Let us make use of it.”
The King also stressed that Africa’s development must be underpinned by robust infrastructure that connects economies and communities.
“No country can develop in isolation. Infrastructure—roads, railways, ports, digital connectivity—is the backbone of progress. Africa needs to build for itself and by itself,” he added.
Strengthening Ghana–Eswatini Ties
As part of efforts to deepen diplomatic and economic relations, King Mswati III extended a formal invitation to President John Dramani Mahama to visit Eswatini in the near future. He described the Ghana–Eswatini relationship as one “grounded in shared values and mutual respect.”
“We see Ghana not just as a friend, but as a partner in Africa’s renaissance. Our two countries can lead by example,” he noted.
Eswatini is seeking to explore trade and investment opportunities with Ghana, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, and technology.
Discussions between the two governments are expected to include frameworks for bilateral cooperation and the promotion of inter-country trade.
Unity, Diaspora, and African-Led Solutions
In a broader continental context, the King called for greater unity and the pursuit of “African solutions to African challenges.” He reaffirmed his belief in the ability of African nations to chart their own development path without overdependence on external aid.
“Our future lies in our hands. The time has come for African-led solutions, rooted in our cultures, economies, and shared aspirations,” the King said.
Recognizing the role of the Ghanaian diaspora in Eswatini, His Majesty praised the Ghanaian community for their discipline, entrepreneurial spirit, and contribution to the local economy.
“The Ghanaian diaspora in Eswatini is thriving. They have integrated well and are contributing meaningfully to our society. We must encourage more citizen exchanges between our countries,” he stated.
Plans are underway to establish exchange programs, enhance educational cooperation, and foster people-to-people connections between Ghana and Eswatini.
The King’s visit, which continues through June 28, is expected to culminate in the signing of several cooperation agreements, reinforcing both countries’ commitment to a united and prosperous Africa.
