The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly has halted an unauthorized construction project near the Bawaleshie traffic light after developers ignored repeated warnings to cease work.
Led by the Municipal Chief Executive, Dr. Michael Mensah, and supported by personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the operation was carried out early Wednesday morning to reclaim a parcel of government land that had been encroached upon by unidentified developers.
According to the Municipal Chief Executive for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Assembly, faceless individuals had taken over the government land at East Legon–Bawaleshie and began putting up structures without the necessary permits.
“Despite several warnings from the Assembly to stop work, the developers continued, forcing us to seek police assistance from the national level,” Dr. Mensah stated.
The enforcement team moved to the site to stop the illegal construction and demolish structures covering portions of the land.
However, the exercise was briefly disrupted when a group of men claiming to be national security operatives allegedly assaulted some of the workers engaged in the demolition.
Police officers at the scene quickly intervened, arresting the suspects, who were later taken to the National Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Dr. Mensah cautioned that the Assembly will not tolerate unauthorized developments within the municipality, stressing that anyone found building without the required permits will face the full force of the law.
