Police have arrested two suspects, including an alleged gang leader, in connection with a robbery attack on the bus of Berekum Chelsea that led to the death of one of the club’s players.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 15, the Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrests, noting that one of the suspects was injured during a shootout with police intelligence officers and is currently receiving medical treatment.
“The Police have arrested the gang leader and one other suspect in connection with the robbery incident that led to the death of the Berekum Chelsea footballer,” the statement said. “One of the suspects sustained injuries during an exchange of fire with the police intelligence teams and has been conveyed to the hospital for medical attention. Further details will be communicated.”
The incident occurred as the team was returning from a Ghana Premier League match against Samartex 1996 in Samreboi. At approximately 10:30 p.m., six armed men reportedly blocked the team’s bus and opened fire.
Amid the attack, the driver lost control and veered off the road into nearby bushes while players and officials fled the vehicle to escape the gunfire. The bus was carrying about 30 players and team staff at the time.
Police say investigations are ongoing, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
