The Ministry of Health has commenced a three-day mid-year review of the government’s health sector commitments contained in the NDC 2024 Manifesto, with a focus on assessing progress and accelerating the implementation of key healthcare initiatives.
The review, which began on Saturday, August 15, 2026, in Ho, brings together heads of agencies, institutions and programmes under the Ministry of Health, led by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
The retreat is expected to provide an opportunity for participants to examine achievements, identify implementation challenges and agree on measures to strengthen the delivery of quality, affordable and equitable healthcare across the country.
Among the major commitments under review are the Free Primary Healthcare initiative, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCare), the retooling of health facilities, expansion of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), and the introduction of specialised nursing programmes.
The Ministry will also assess progress on the construction of additional regional hospitals in the six newly created regions, the establishment of cataract centres in selected regions, formalisation of allowances for nursing trainees, recruitment of health professionals and the completion of abandoned health projects.
Heads of the various agencies and programmes are expected to present updates on their respective areas, highlighting achievements, challenges and measures needed to speed up implementation.
As part of efforts to promote accountability and prudent management of public resources, participants will also undergo training in Public Financial Management. The training is intended to strengthen financial governance and ensure the efficient use of resources within the health sector.
The retreat is being attended by Board Chairs, Chief Executive Officers of health agencies and Directors of the Ministry of Health.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Akandoh highlighted key achievements recorded across the health sector and commended the various agencies whose work contributed to those successes.
He, however, charged Board Chairs and heads of agencies to ensure strict compliance with the Public Financial Management Act, stressing the need for prudent and efficient use of public funds.
The Ministry said it remains committed to delivering on its mandate and advancing Ghana’s goal of Universal Health Coverage, while ensuring that healthcare services are accessible
