The leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has suspended any immediate increase in public transport fares following further engagements with the Ministry of Transport.

The two major transport bodies say consultations with government are ongoing to determine the full impact of the government’s GH¢2 per litre intervention on diesel prices before a final decision is taken on proposed fare adjustments.

In a joint press release issued on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the GPRTU and GRTCC said formal consultations commenced at a meeting with the Minister for Transport and his technical team in Accra on Tuesday, September 8.

The meeting, according to the transport unions, formed part of the long-standing partnership between government and transport operators and was aimed at ensuring that public transportation remains safe, reliable and affordable.

Unions propose fare increase

At the meeting, the GPRTU and GRTCC presented a proposal for an upward review of public transport fares for the 2026 fare window.

Government, however, briefed the unions on prevailing macroeconomic conditions and measures being implemented to stabilise the Ghanaian cedi.

A major issue discussed was the GH¢2 per litre intervention on diesel, which government says is intended to cushion transport operators and passengers from the impact of fuel costs.

The unions and government subsequently agreed that the intervention’s effect on the operating costs of commercial transport must be carefully assessed alongside the unions’ proposal for a fare increase.

No fare increase yet

The two transport bodies stressed that no decision has been taken to increase public transport fares.

They said further engagement is required before any determination is made, with a joint team now tasked with reviewing the various cost inputs affecting commercial transport operations.

The team comprises representatives from the Ministry of Transport, GPRTU and GRTCC.

The outcome of the review, they said, will be communicated to the public when the process is completed.

Current fares remain unchanged

The GPRTU and GRTCC have consequently reassured passengers that the existing approved public transport fares remain in force across the country.

They have directed drivers, station masters and transport owners to continue charging the current approved fares until further notice.

The unions also appealed to drivers, station masters, transport owners and passengers to remain calm, orderly and cooperative as discussions with government continue.

The development comes amid growing attention to the cost of public transportation, with operators seeking fare adjustments to reflect changes in fuel and other operational costs, while government seeks to prevent additional financial pressure on commuters.

For now, commuters are therefore expected to continue paying the existing approved fares until the Ministry of Transport and the transport unions conclude their review and announce any new arrangement.
