The Ranking Member on the Parliamentary Select Committee of Communications, Ahlaji A. B. A Fuseini has justified the minority in parliament’s continuous criticisms of the operations of the Electoral Commission (EC).
The group for quite some time now has been raising serious concerns over the neutrality and fairness of the commission following some statements recently made by the Chairperson and Deputy of the commission, Jean Mensah and Dr. Bossman Asare respectively.
According to Ahlaji Fuseini whilst at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Madam Mensah was one of the few who stood for the commission to effectively partner other stake holders to enhance its operations. However speaking on Radio Gold’s Current Affairs program, “AHLAJI & AHLAJI” which was aired on Accra based Pan African T.V and also on radiogold905fm on face book, Ahlaji Fuseini who is also the legislator for the Sagnerigu Constituency said recent pronouncements by the Chairperson of the EC is in stark contrast with her stance on the operations of the commission whilst at the IEA.
“On the 27th of April, 2016, Madam Jean Mensah said, when the independence of the EC should be protected and respected, the EC should also be account table to the will of Ghanaians and should take all steps to ensure the conduct of free, fair, peaceful and transparent elections. The same 27th, the EC should collaborate with all stake holders in fully resolving the impasse and challenges with regard to the voters’ register as well as ensuring the conduct of free, fair and transparent elections, he stressed.”
However according to Ahlaji Fuseini, the view of the Chairperson of the EC in relation to current happenings at the commission leaves much to be desired of.
“Today she is saying what? Nobody can force IPAC on the Electoral Commission, nobody can dictate to the EC and the EC is not accountable to anybody. These are just her statements, just few years down the line when she has occupied the commission as chair person, he fumed.”
