A resident of Krobo Odumase has dismissed claims that the current impasse between the residents and Power Distribution Services (PDS) was triggered by their refusal to pay electricity bills.
Minister for Energy John Peter Amewu yesterday backed the protests which has caused two lives and ordered that PDS restores power to the town.
PDS is embarking on a massive disconnection exercise over months of accumulated electricity bills.
The Energy minister however believes the bills that the residents are being asked to pay are outrageous and has promised to look into the matter.
Speaking during the call in segment of the Gold Power Drive earlier today, the resident told host of the program Samuel Eshun they were only demanding fairness from PDS.
Narrating his ordeal, the resident said his bill jumped from GH₵80 to GH₵1800 over a one month period compelling to lodge a complaint with the then Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
According to him, he was asked to ignore the new bill and pay the GH₵80 after officials of the power distributor found that his complaints had merit.
The Krobo Odumase resident said the situation was not limited to him as several other residents saw huge unexplained jumps in their electricity bills over the same period forcing them to raise similar complaints.
He cited the case of an old widow who received a bill of over GH₵3000 for using a single two light bulbs and a television.
The situation, he explained turned chaotic after some officials of PDS came to the town to insist that they pay up 50% of the bills that the ECG at the time, admitted were flawed.
He tells Radio Gold, he was only spared disconnection because of the protests and indicated that Krobo Odumase residents are ready to pay their bills but will not agree to the outrageous bills being submitted to them.
