Two civil society groups, Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) and Coalition for Restoration (CFR) will on June 11, 2019 take to the streets to demonstrate against what they say are continuous violations of the 1992 Constitution in the wake of the directive for several radio stations to go off air.
ASEPA was an active participant in the recent demonstration held to protest the decision of the National Communications Authority (NCA) against the radio stations and the issue will feature prominently in the upcoming demonstration.
In a notification written to the Accra Regional Police Command, the two groups argue that the NCA in ordering the stations to go off air violated their own laws and “regulatory provisions”.
The NCA says its decision was in furtherance of the ruling of the Electronic Communications Tribunal (ECT) on the petition against the excessive fines imposed by the authority in 2017.
ASEPA and CFR however disagree and accuse the NCA of rather acting contrary to the ruling of the “tribunal of competent jurisdiction”.
They describe the action as a reckless shutdown of pro opposition media houses.
The two groups also accuse the NCA of a discriminative application of the laws of the country by singling out media houses connected to the opposition for closure.
