Two civil society groups, Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) and Coalition for Restoration (CFR) have officially written to the Accra Regional Police command to notify the police of its upcoming “civil procession” on the June 11, 2019.
The notification, the two groups say is in compliance with the Public Order Act, Act 491 (1994).
The groups in the notification addressed to the Accra Regional Police Commander dated May 27, 2019 said the civil procession is being organized against what they say are “the continuous violation of the Republic Of Ghana by some agencies and some arms of government”.
The groups mentioned the Supreme Court, Electoral Commission, National Identification Authority (NIA) and the National Communications Authority (NCA) as the agencies and institutions engaged in these constitutional violations.
The group will during the procession present petitions to the Chief Justice, President and Director General of the NCA.
The petition to the President, the groups hinted will demand for the removal of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission Jean Mensah.
Under the Constitution, petitions for the removal of the EC Chairperson are to be submitted to the President and the two groups believe they have strong grounds to seek her removal for “violating the laws of the land”.
The groups also hinted that the petition to the NCA will demand the “immediate reopening of all closed down media houses across the country”.
ASEPA and CFR are hoping to attract 2,000 Ghanaians onto the street on June 11, 2019.
