The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has pledged to release detailed voter registration statistics by Monday, November 11, according to Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman of Corporate Services. Although not legally obligated to provide these summaries, the EC aims to increase transparency and accessibility for political parties and the public ahead of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Dr. Asare noted that EC technicians are actively working to compile and audit the various summaries, which will include details on the total number of registered voters, transferred votes, voter populations by constituency and region, and proxy lists. “The EC took it upon itself to provide data at the national and regional levels, ensuring parties can access and verify the credibility of the register,” Dr. Asare stated in an interview on Joy News’ Top Story.
He clarified that while the EC has met its legal obligation by delivering the certified Voters Register to political parties, as stipulated under C.I. 91 (Regulation 27), the additional summaries will offer a simplified view of voter statistics. The certified register, which was provided to the parties within the legally mandated 21 days, contains all necessary information for parties to analyze registered voter numbers regionally and nationally.
Dr. Asare emphasized that political parties bear the responsibility to review these documents and derive the figures needed. However, he assured that the Commission remains committed to making the process straightforward by providing detailed summaries. “Producing these summaries involves thorough auditing, and this work is underway,” he added.
Despite the additional requests from political parties led by the National Democratic Congress, Dr. Asare reiterated the Commission’s confidence in the credibility of the Voters Register and called for public support in ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections on December 7, 2024.
