The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has inspected progress on the Kumasi–Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade (K1–K2 Project), describing it as a critical investment that will significantly strengthen electricity supply in Kumasi and across the Ashanti Region.

During the inspection at Anwomaso, Dr. Jinapor said the project forms part of the government’s commitment to modernising Ghana’s electricity transmission infrastructure to meet rising demand and improve the reliability of power supply.

He explained that the project involves replacing the existing 19-kilometre single-circuit 364MVA transmission line with a modern double-circuit line capable of carrying 2x488MVA (978MVA), effectively more than doubling the current transmission capacity.

“The project will replace an ageing 19-kilometre single-circuit 364MVA transmission line with a modern, higher-capacity double-circuit 2x488MVA (978MVA), more than doubling the current capacity,” Dr. Jinapor stated.

The Minister further disclosed that the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) will upgrade one of the transformers at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation from 66MVA to 145MVA, a move expected to enhance the reliability, stability and resilience of electricity supply within Kumasi and surrounding communities.

Dr. Jinapor noted that the project has entered its final phase of construction, with major works scheduled to commence from Monday, July 20, 2026. He cautioned that the essential engineering works could result in temporary and localised power interruptions for some electricity consumers.

“As we enter the final phase of construction, some customers may experience temporary and localised power interruptions to allow these essential works to be carried out safely,” he said.

He assured residents that the temporary inconvenience is necessary to deliver a stronger and more dependable electricity network capable of supporting the continued economic growth and industrial expansion of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region.

The Minister appealed to residents, businesses and institutions to cooperate with the implementing agencies throughout the exercise.

“These temporary inconveniences are necessary to deliver a stronger, more reliable electricity network that will support the continued growth and development of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region.”

He added that GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) would work diligently to minimise disruptions and restore power promptly whenever outages occur.

“I appeal to residents and businesses to bear with us during this period. Every effort will be made by GRIDCo and ECG to minimise disruptions and restore supply as quickly as possible. I thank the people of Kumasi for their patience, understanding and continued support,” Dr. Jinapor said.

The Kumasi–Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade is expected to improve power system resilience, reduce network constraints and provide sufficient transmission capacity to meet the growing electricity needs of Kumasi and the wider Ashanti Region.
