GCB Bank PLC has launched its Tier-3 Pension Loan, a new financing solution that enables eligible contributors to Ghana’s voluntary Tier-3 pension scheme to access credit of up to GH¢700,000 by leveraging their accumulated retirement savings.

The product, unveiled in Accra on Wednesday, is designed to expand access to credit for both salaried and self-employed individuals while preserving the long-term objective of retirement savings. The facility allows borrowers to access loans secured by their Tier-3 pension contributions or accrued benefits, with the loan amount capped at 80 per cent of the applicant’s accrued pension benefits, subject to affordability based on net income.

The Bank said the loan is available to both GCB customers and non-customers, broadening access to financing for contributors enrolled in registered Tier-3 pension schemes, including employer-sponsored schemes and master trust schemes.

Under the product, eligible applicants can borrow up to GH¢700,000, with repayment periods of up to 84 months (seven years) through fixed monthly instalments calculated on a reducing balance basis. Borrowers may repay through salary deductions from a GCB account, direct deductions from a G-Money wallet, or payroll deductions arranged through their employers.

To qualify, applicants must be between 21 and 59 years of age. Salaried workers are required to have been employed for at least 12 months, while GCB customers must have received at least one month’s salary through a GCB account unless repayment is arranged through payroll deductions. The product is also available to self-employed individuals who have accumulated sufficient vested Tier-3 pension balances to support the facility.

According to GCB Bank, the introduction of the facility is intended to bridge the financing gap faced by many workers by allowing them to unlock part of the value of their pension savings without waiting until retirement.

The Bank said customers would benefit from competitive fixed interest rates, faster loan processing, flexible repayment options and the ability to borrow against up to 80 per cent of their current Tier-3 pension balance, providing access to credit for personal, family and business needs while maintaining structured repayment terms.

The launch also marks a significant expansion of pension-backed lending in Ghana’s financial sector, where retirement savings are increasingly being leveraged to improve access to affordable credit while protecting contributors’ long-term pension interests.

The initiative is being introduced in partnership with several licensed pension trustees, including Petra Trust, Pensions Alliance Trust, Negotiated Benefits Trust Company, Axis Pensions and Standard Pensions Trust, enabling eligible contributors across multiple registered Tier-3 schemes to benefit from the facility.

The Bank said the product reflects its commitment to developing innovative financial solutions that improve financial inclusion and provide customers with more convenient access to credit to meet personal and professional aspirations.
