The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take over investigations into an incident involving businessman Ibrahim Mahama, as authorities move to ensure a thorough and transparent probe.
The decision, announced after a high-level meeting between police management and Mr. Mahama, forms part of efforts by the Ghana Police Service to reinforce public confidence in the handling of the case.
Mr Mahama, an alleged assault during an altercation in Tamale have travelled to Accra, welcoming the IGP’s directive to transfer the case to the CID and Police Headquarters for further investigation.
At a media briefing, Mr Ibrahim Mahama said hi and his team made the journey from Tamale to ensure that the events of Saturday the 8th are fully examined. The victims stressed that their pursuit is for justice rather than compensation, expressing confidence that relocating the investigation to Accra signals the seriousness with which authorities are treating the matter.
According to the him, the incident began as a confrontation between a relative and police officers, but escalated after attempts to record the encounter allegedly heightened tensions, leading to an assault. The victims revealed that medical care is ongoing in Accra, including scans and dental treatment for injuries sustained.
They further indicated that the legal process has commenced and pledged to accept the final outcome of investigations and any subsequent court proceedings.
Meanwhile, the IGP has also tasked the Police Professional Standards Bureau to initiate and fast-track a parallel investigation into the conduct of officers involved, while the CID handles the criminal aspect of the case. Regional police commands have already taken statements from Mr. Mahama and his associates, and engaged residents as part of preliminary fact-finding.
Police management has assured Mr. Mahama of full cooperation throughout the process, emphasizing that any individual found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law. The IGP has also appealed to the public to remain calm, pledging regular updates as investigations progress.
Authorities say the measures are aimed at ensuring accountability, transparency, and fairness, while addressing broader public concerns about police conduct and safeguarding citizens’ rights.
