President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to equitable development during an inspection of the Akosombo–Gyakiti road project in the Eastern Region as part of his Resetting GhanaTour.
Speaking during the visit, Mr. Mahama reflected on Ghana’s development history, invoking the vision of Kwame Nkrumah and the significance of the Akosombo Dam.
“The vision of Kwame Nkrumah was to ensure that all Ghanaians have access to development, including electricity, and the Akosombo Dam stands as a symbol of that vision,” he said.
He noted, however, that communities displaced by the construction of the dam did not immediately benefit from electricity and other amenities.
“It is only right that such communities continue to benefit from development in recognition of the sacrifices they made for the nation.”
Progress on Road Project
Mr. Mahama acknowledged past setbacks, revealing that earlier contracts covering about four kilometres of the road failed to deliver expected results.
“I am, however, encouraged by the performance of the current contractor, who has demonstrated capacity and commitment to the work.”
He expressed confidence that the ongoing project would be completed to a high standard.
Broader Development Agenda
President John Dramani Mahama stressed that development goes beyond road construction, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure across sectors.
“Development is not limited to roads alone, but includes other infrastructure that improves the lives of the people.”
He indicated that the area’s Member of Parliament, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, will work with government to address key development concerns by 2028.
Education and Community Support
Mr. Mahama also commended schoolchildren who welcomed him with placards during the visit.
“I thank them for their encouragement.”
He noted that schools in the Akwamu area have benefited from interventions by the Ghana Education Trust Fund, as part of ongoing efforts to improve educational infrastructure.
Assurance of Completion
Reaffirming government’s commitment, Mr. Mahama praised the contractor’s track record and assured residents of continued support.
“By this time next year, we expect to return to commission this road, together with ongoing projects in the secondary schools.”
