Minister of Communication Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has said most of the people crying that they do not have Ghana Card to link their SIMs are members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who listened to their party when the party told them to boycott the Ghana Card in 2018.
Speaking in an interview with Kwame Sefa Kayi, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said while the party hierarchy was telling the members to boycott the Ghana Card, some of them surreptitiously went behind to acquire the card in secret.
She said it was unfortunate that some Ghanaians listen to NDC when they speak.
“The NDC was opposed to the Ghana Card and wanted it to fail. They told their people and Ghanaians to ‘Boycott Ghana Card’” she said.
When the news went round that their MPs had registered for the Ghana Card, the MPs issued a disclaimer… they came out to deny it. So it was NDC policy to fight the successful rollout of the Ghana Card and I am convinced some people listened to them and didn’t register” she explained.
“What is painful is that while your political party is saying don’t go and register, they passed the back to go and register” she quickly added.
She said if every Ghanaian had gone out to register at all levels during the mass registration, the present problems encountered in the SIM registration wouldn’t have happened.
“If everybody joined the mass registration at the time NIA started from region to region, constituency to constituency, district by district we wouldn’t have had these numbers now saying they don’t have Ghana Card,” she said.
It will be recalled that in July 2018, the NDC held a press conference and declared a boycott of the Ghana Card.
The party urged Ghanaians and its members not to register for the Ghana Card until its grievances about the eligibility criteria including birth certificate have been addressed.
