Residents in parts of eastern Accra and Tema are grappling with intermittent water supply following disruptions linked to unstable electricity and operational challenges at a major treatment facility.
In a statement issued on April 27, 2026, Ghana Water Ltd. (GWL) said the situation is primarily due to erratic power supply to the Kpong Water Treatment Plant, which serves a significant portion of Accra East and the Tema enclave.
According to the company, water production and distribution are heavily dependent on stable electricity to power treatment processes, pumping systems, and transmission infrastructure. Any fluctuation or outage directly affects output and supply to consumers.
GWL also cited an influx of aquatic weeds at the Kpong intake point as a compounding factor. The situation has worsened following recent heavy rains around the Akosombo area, leading to increased clogging of intake screens and restricting the abstraction of raw water for treatment.
Technical teams have been deployed to manage the situation, including clearing weeds and maintaining operations to minimize disruptions. The company said it is working closely with key stakeholders such as the Volta River Authority (VRA), Ghana Grid Company, and the Electricity Company of Ghana to restore stable power supply to the facility.
The combined challenges have resulted in reduced and intermittent water flow to several communities, particularly across eastern parts of Accra.
GWL has apologized to affected residents for the inconvenience and assured the public that efforts are underway to restore normal supply as quickly as possible.
The company says it will provide further updates as the situation evolves.
