President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to construct an airport in the Upper East Region to boost economic activities and improve connectivity. The airport project will be undertaken through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, in collaboration with gold mining companies in the region.
This partnership will facilitate the safe transportation of gold bullion from the Upper East Region to Accra.
The President has directed the Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company to begin sourcing funds for the project
The proposed airport is expected to foster economic growth and improve connectivity for the people of the Upper East Region.
In addition to the airport project, President Mahama has outlined several other initiatives aimed at transforming the Upper East Region. These include:
Expanding Rural Electrification
Phase Two of the 10 key electrification projects will connect more communities to the national grid, boosting local economic activities and improving living conditions
Unlocking Agricultural Potential
The completion of the Tamni Irrigation Project will enable all-year-round farming in the Garu-Tempane area
Healthcare Infrastructure Upgrades
The upgrading of the Navrongo War Memorial Hospital and the completion of Phase Three of the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga will enhance medical services and support medical training
Education Sector Boost
The uncapping of the GETFund will provide more funding for school infrastructure projects in the Upper East Region, helping to eliminate schools under trees and address the lack of furniture in schools
