President John Dramani Mahama has strongly condemned the killing of a Ghana Army soldier in Bawku, as well as the military’s retaliation that led to assaults and injuries of innocent civilians.
He emphasized that members of the Ghana Armed Forces deployed in Bawku are peacekeepers, sent to protect lives and property amid the ongoing tensions.
Mahama cautioned against targeting military personnel, stressing that they are not combatants in the conflict.
He also urged the security forces to exercise restraint and prioritize intelligence-led investigations to identify and bring the culprits to book.
The President extended his condolences to the family of the slain soldier and sympathized with civilians affected by the military’s counteractions.
He reaffirmed his commitment to fostering peace in Bawku, urging all parties to engage in constructive dialogue and avoid actions that could escalate the situation further.
This incident is not the first time President Mahama has addressed the conflict in Bawku.
In January 2024, he called for justice and peace after three men were killed in the area, emphasizing the importance of seeking justice for the victims and restoring peace in Bawku.
