The government has declared Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in seven regions affected by the recent floods, as part of efforts to restore sanitation and prevent further disasters.
The announcement, made on Monday by the Presidency Communications Office under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee, said the nationwide exercise will be held under the theme, “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the Floods.”
According to the statement, the two-day campaign aims to mobilise citizens to clean their communities, secure the environment and safeguard lives following the widespread flooding.
President John Dramani Mahama has directed all government appointees, including ministers, chief executive officers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and heads of public institutions, to leave their offices and lead cleanup activities alongside residents in their respective communities.
The exercise will be conducted in two phases. On Friday, personnel from the security services, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and waste management companies will begin the cleanup. The general public will join the exercise on Saturday to expand the nationwide effort.
Authorities say the exercise will focus on desilting choked drains to improve water flow ahead of expected heavy rains, clearing sand, weeds and debris from roads and highways, and cleaning public spaces such as markets, lorry parks, recreational parks and communal waste collection points.
The government has directed all MMDAs to work closely with waste management companies to provide logistics, including waste trucks, gloves, shovels and other cleaning equipment. Assemblies have also been instructed to ensure that all silt and collected refuse are removed immediately to prevent them from being washed back into drainage systems.
Describing the initiative as a critical national intervention, the Presidency said years of indiscriminate littering and plastic pollution have clogged drainage systems, contributing to preventable floods that have destroyed livelihoods and claimed lives.
The statement called on Ghanaians to unite behind the campaign, urging citizens to demonstrate community spirit, discipline and collective responsibility.
“Clean Ghana, Save Lives,” the statement concluded.
The statement was signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
