The Right to Information Commission (RTIC) has launched activities to mark its 5th Anniversary and this year’s RTI Month, reaffirming its mandate to promote transparency, accountability, and open governance.
Speaking at the launch, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Ms. Genevieve Shirley Lartey, Esq., said since its establishment in October 2020 under Act 989, the Commission “has worked to advance one of the most important rights in our democracy; the right of access to information.”
She noted that “over these five years, we have consistently promoted transparency, accountability, and open governance, while empowering citizens to participate fully in national development.”
This year’s anniversary is being celebrated under the theme: “RTI @ 5: Championing Transparency and Accountability through Access to Environmental Information in a Digital Era.”
According to Ms. Lartey, the theme is both “timely and significant,” as it highlights not only the Commission’s five-year journey but also “the global focus on ensuring access to environmental information while embracing digital innovation as a tool for inclusion and sustainable development.”
As part of the anniversary, the Commission has outlined several activities including media and civic engagements, a stakeholders’ conference, team-building activities, and a thanksgiving service.
She added that the Commission will also join the international community in observing the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) 2025 under the global theme “Ensuring Access to Environmental Information in the Digital Age.”
