Director of Elections for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has criticised the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Madam Jean Mensa for running the commission as if it were a non-governmental institution (NGO).
He noted that there is a big difference between running an NGO and running a complex organizations such as the Electoral Commission that supervises over electoral matters in the country.
Mr Afriyie-Ankrah was responding to claims by the Chairperson that she inherited a weak EC without a governance framework without administrative policies among others.
“There is a difference between running an NGO, a civil society organization…and running such a complex organization as the Electoral Commission,” he observed.
He then enjoined her to learn and fully understand the workings of the commission before attempting to innovate, arguing that there had been significant improvements in the work of the EC making it the envy of the world.
“Our system has become the envy of the world. People from all over of Africa and the world to study our system,” he claimed in an interview on Joy FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com.
He added that the Chairperson’s stance that the EC is not bound by decisions of the Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) is problematic.
The Electoral Commission Chairperson is on a consultative tour to various stakeholders of the commission. She met with President Akufo-Addo Thursday.
