The newly appointed Chairperson of the Police Council, Her Excellency Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has pledged to lead a reform-driven and principled Police Council, aimed at restoring public trust and professionalism in Ghana’s Police Service.
Speaking at her inaugural address following her appointment to the Ghana Police Service Council by President President John Armani, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang described her new role as a “solemn duty” to the nation and to the dedicated officers within the Service.
“I accept this role not as a privilege, but as a solemn duty to the people of our nation and to the men and women of integrity who serve in our Police Service,” she stated.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that the country stands at a critical juncture, calling for a resetting of the Police Service focused on principled leadership, a clear vision, and an unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and public service.
“The work of the Police Council is not ceremonial; it is the moral and strategic compass meant to guide the integrity, professionalism, and transformation of our law enforcement institutions,” she stressed.
She pledged to lead the Council with transparency, inclusivity, and an unwavering respect for the rule of law. The Council, she noted, will work to ensure the Police Service is empowered, well-trained, accountable, and equipped to tackle the demands of modern democratic policing.
Culture of Honor, Not Fear
In her address, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang underscored the importance of restoring the public image of the Police.
“We must promote a culture where the uniform is a symbol of honor, not fear,” she said. “We must foster trust between the Police and the communities they serve, emphasizing community policing, human rights, and zero tolerance for abuse of power.”
The Chairperson promised that discipline within the Service would be firm but fair, with all officers held to the highest standards of conduct.
Support for Officers, Fairness in Promotions
Addressing officers directly, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged their frontline role in national security and vowed to ensure leadership that supports them.
“Undue delays in promotions, unfair treatment, discrimination, and unjustified grievances will be thoroughly scrutinized as part of our resetting agenda,” she assured.
Service to Citizens
Turning to the public, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reinforced the Council’s duty to the nation’s citizens.
“We serve you. Your safety, your rights, and your confidence in our Police Service will always be at the center of our work,” she affirmed.
Call for Unity and Integrity
Concluding her remarks, the Chairperson called for unity of purpose among Council members, expressing confidence that with resolve, integrity, and collective wisdom, the Police Council will contribute to building a safer, fairer, and more just nation.
