Most NPP MPs are facing huge battles in their constituencies ahead of the party’s primaries scheduled for the first quarter 2020.
While some have been handed the seemingly impossible task of facing off and defeating high profile government appointees with deep pockets backed in some cases by President Akufo-Addo, others have to contend with candidates who have managed to secure the backing of the Municipal/District Chief Executives and constituency executives of their parties.
The NPP MPs have also not been helped by the lack or little development in their constituencies.
One MP who is facing such threat is the NPP MP for Assin South who recently discovered a plot that shows that he has to defeat virtually every powerful person in his constituency if he wants to take a step closer to retaining his seat.
The ploy according to Radiogldlive.com sources involved the District Chief Executive for Assin South, the District NADMO Director, NPP Constituency Chairman, his 1st Vice Chairman and Organizer.
The alleged plot is intended to benefit the man seeking to unseat the MP in the primaries, Joseph Damtse.
Joseph Damtse is well known in the constituency largely because his current attempt will be his third one.
He failed in his bid to unseat Prof Dominic Fobih in 2011 and was beaten to the candidature in 2015 by the incumbent Ntim Fodjour.
Despite his powerful alliance, Mr. Damtse has been left heavily exposed after the leakage of a plan to make the MP unpopular.
Sources say the ploy was hatched in the afternoon of Sunday October 6 2019, by the powerful allies of the MP’s contender and involved the recruitment of 40 delegates.
The key architects according to radiogollive.com sources including the aspirant on the said date met 40 delegates at Assin Endwa.
Information available indicates that the 40 delegates were recruited, named ‘UB40’ and armed with a plan that they were so sure would make the Assin south MP easy to unseat.
In return for their services, each member of UB40 was promised a weekly wage of 50 cedis, with a selected 10 to earn extra 30 cedis daily.
The task of the UB40 members was to place calls to delegates, pretending to be from the camp of the incumbent claiming to have been tasked to identify delegates who support and are sure to vote for the MP.
The UB40 will then report to their paymasters on which delegates are on the side of the MP in order to identify those who owe allegiance to Mr. Damtse and the ones who will need convincing to side with the contender.
The UB40 was also tasked to embark on “vilification attacks and spreading falsehoods about the MP to make him unpopular.”
The ploy has however hit a huge roadblock after it was uncovered by the campaign team of the Assin South MP who were able to infiltrate the camp of Mr. Damtse and going as far as securing a recording of the meeting.
The recording of the meeting has left delegates and members of the NPP in Assin South shocked.
The story is told of how Mr. Damtse famously refused to concede defeat, issued threats to delegates and abandoned the constituency after the 2011 primaries to the extent of failing to support Prof Dominic Fobih in the 2012 elections.
He is alleged to have repeated the conduct after losing to Ntim Fodjour in 2015 and once again failed to concede defeat. In the 2015 instance Mr. Damtse is alleged to have held a series of press conferences on TV and radio threatening to go independent and once again refused to support the party in the 2016 campaign.
