Alex Segbefia cautions Ghanaians against Growing Culture of Fear Ahead of Elections

The campaign manager for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, Alex Segbefia has called for a change of government, citing a growing culture of fear and intimidation under the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

He cautioned Ghanaians about an escalating culture of fear and intimidation as the country approaches the December 7 elections.

Speaking during a recent campaign tour in the Ashanti Region alongside Professor Opoku Agyemang, Alex Segbefia cited several incidents of political violence as indicators of such an alarming trend.

He cited the 2019 killing of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale, saying that “nobody noticed” the implications of the crime at the time.

Mr. Alex Segbefia also referenced the violence during the Ayawaso by-elections and mentioned the tragic deaths of eight individuals during the Techiman South parliamentary elections in 2020 as serious threats to the country’s democracy.

Additionally, he brought attention to a recent attempt on the life of Cynthia Morrison, the Member of Parliament for Gomoa East, along with the unexplained deaths of two other members of parliament of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He expressed concern that such gradual buildup of intimidation has fostered a gripping fear that stifles free speech and normalizes a culture of silence in the country.

“We are living in fear, and if we have gotten to the point where we feel the need to issue caveats when speaking, that’s a crippling fear,” he said.

Alex Segbefia warned against desensitization to such fear, urging Ghanaians not to accept such an environment as the norm.

He drew parallels to historical situations in Togo and the Congo, where fear has long stifled freedom of speech and expression.

He called on citizens to reject such growing culture of fear and intimidation, advocating for a return to the days of open discourse and freedom that characterized the administration of former President John Mahama.
