Member of Parliament for Tamale North Alhassan Suhuyini has cautioned Ghanaians against looking up to the opposition for development.
He believes development should be sole prerogative of the ruling party which holds and has control over the public purse.
MPs in Ghana are most at times seen as agents of developments while Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives who are responsible for disbursing public resources at the local level are usually left of the hook.
The situation places a lot of pressure on MPs especially those in opposition whose constituencies can be targeted and deprived of development to make them unpopular.
The situation has been worsened under the administration of President Akufo-Addo due to a disinterest in development projects at the local level with MPs especially in the opposition being forced to find money and fill in the gap.
Commenting on the situation in a Facebook post, Alhassan Suhuyini urged Ghanaians to demand accountability from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and not the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“What did we ask the NPP party and their candidate to do for our constituency when they were in opposition?”
“Don’t be deceived to focus on an opposition party now for your development, the NPP collect your taxes for development,” he stated.
The Tamale Central MP believes the key question Ghanaians need to be asking is “What has the NPP government and their candidate done about our problems in our constituency?”
“You know what the NDC government did and as the NDC candidate in 2016 you know the little I did, and as MP after 2016, with limited resources compared to the NPP controlled Municipal Assembly, we will account for what we have done so far.”
“For us it’s not politics at all cost and by all means, it’s service to the best of our ability,” he stated.
