Reverend Kusi Boateng, who is the secretary to the Board of Trustees overseeing the construction of Ghana’s National Cathedral, has argued that the Cathedral, when complete, will generate more income for government than all sports stadiums put together.
Speaking on JoyNews on the controversial cathedral, Reverend Boateng argued that notwithstanding the scepticism of Ghana about the Cathedral, the economic benefits of it will be enormous and will surpass returns from investment on sports stadiums.
“…it will amaze you to know that when we open up the model, the economic benefits the nation will get far outweighs all the sports stadiums in Ghana put together” he declared in the JoyNews interview.
Plans to build the interdenominational Cathedral have been met with widespread criticism by many Ghanaians, but the government has been resolute and the multi-million dollar Cathedral is expected to be completed in 2025.
Reverend Boateng also added that the controversy surrounding the construction may be as a result of a lack of understanding of the economic viability of the project.
For him, the Cathedral will create jobs and help in alleviating the hardship in the country, stressing that the partisanship that has greeting the project is unfortunate since it ought to be viewed as a national project.
National Cathedral to cost over $100m
The Construction of the $100 million National Cathedral is expected to begin in March 2020 and the Finance Minister is convinced that God will build His temple.
Already, the government has demolished houses of judges located on the proposed site for the construction of the National Cathedral at Ridge in Accra.
It has also selected renowned architect, Sir David Adjeye, to design the building, which has since been made public.
The building of the Cathedral is in fulfilment of a pledge President Akufo-Addo revealed he made to God before winning the 2016 elections.
He said the 5,000-seater auditorium Cathedral project will also bequeath to the country a gracious national park for all Ghanaians, bring new skills, technology and jobs to the country and will act as a beacon to national, regional and international tourists.
