Strategic Thinkers Network-Africa (STRANEK AFRICA) is urging the Ghanaian media to desist from tagging its neighboring country Nigeria with criminality.
This follows the recent kidnapping activities in Ghana involving Nigerians as well as Ghanaian nationals.
However media publications in Ghana suggest that these activities are mainly initiated by Nigerians with their headline captions.
In a press statement STRANEK AFRICA argues that crimes are perpetuated by individuals and not states and urge the media to desist from sensationalism and stereotyping.
According to STRANEK Africa the current reportage has the potential of inflaming public sentiments against hardworking Nigerians because of the actions of a few bad nuts.
“It is therefore wrong for the media to finger-point and headline Nigerians for crimes in Ghana even when Ghanaians are involved. There are hundreds of good and hardworking Nigerians in Ghana contributing to our national development. It is also worrying to see some Ghanaian media houses needlessly inflaming public sentiment every time one misguided Nigerian of over 200 million dispersed around the world commits a crime”
STRANEK Africa therefore admonished media houses in Ghana to guide their reporters and editorial teams in their reportage on matters involving nationals from the sub-region.
