The Vice Presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Opoku-Agyemang has repeated calls on traditional leaders to speak out concerning the Electoral Commission’s decision not to conduct a forensic audit of the voters’ register ahead of the 2024 elections.
Speaking to chiefs and elders of Achimfo in the Aowin constituency during a campaign tour, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang underscored the pivotal role that traditional rulers can play in promoting a transparent and peaceful electoral process.
She urged the chiefs to utilize their influence and partnerships to advocate for electoral integrity.
She recounted the violence that marred the 2020 elections, resulting in the tragic deaths of eight individuals, including 30-year-old Ibrahim Abass, who was reportedly shot by a national security officer.
Additionally, four others were injured, including a police officer.
The lead up to 2024 elections has been inundated with concerns over the partizan nature of the Jean Mensah led Electoral Commission and the credibility of the voters register.
These have intensified calls for a secure and transparent voting system in the upcoming elections.
Professor Opoku Agyemang believes these concerns need to be addressed speedily and comprehensively
“We cannot afford to witness further loss of life or any form of violence that endangers the integrity of our electoral processes,” she told the chiefs in Achimfo.
The NDC’s call for a forensic audit has gained significant support from various civil society organizations and political activists, who assert that such an audit is crucial for restoring public confidence in the electoral system.
