Disaporan group, NDC Professional Forum North America is alleging that the recent detention of two journalists by National Security is part of a ploy to strike fear into the hearts of journalists bent on exposing the bad deeds of the Nana Akufo-Addo led administration.
The two Modern Ghana journalists are said to have been picked up and tortured by National Security after the same outfit ordered the online news portal to pull down a news story and an article alleging the complicity of the National Security minister and an MP in the unending University of Education Winneba saga.
In a statement issued on Wednesday 3rd July, 2019, President NDC Pro-Forum North America Arnold Appiah said the incident shows that the New Patriotic Party administration of Nana Akufo-Addo would go to any length to silence the media.
“The Proforum North America is convinced that the self-glorifying Akufo Addo led misgovernment by their actions are determined to use the slightest excuse to terrorize and silence the media to kowtow to their cover up of grand corruption and intimidation of political opponents.”
“Last week’s spectacle follows numerous atrocities against the media including the gruesome murder of Ahmed Hussein Suale of the TigerEye PI,” he stated.
Advocacy group, Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has accounted as many 17 attacks on journalists in less than 2 years.
Proforum North America believes the worsening situation of intimidation of journalists is a wakeup call for all Ghanaians to stand up against actions of the government that threaten Ghana’s status as a democratic country.
“We in the diaspora reiterate our concern about deteriorating press freedom back home and its consequences on driving investment; and therefore implore all Ghanaians to stand up and defend our hard-won democratic credentials that is being tainted shamelessly by this crop of so called liberal democrats,” the group added.
