Former Deputy Minister for Oil and Petroleum, John Jinapor is calling on Ghanaians to demand an investigation into the activities of the Power Distribution Service (PDS) since assuming control of the Electricity Company of Ghana.
His call comes on the heels of threats by Independent Power Producers (IPP) to stop supplying power to Ghanaians if PDS fails to pay monies owed them.
In a statement, Yapei Kusawgu MP John Jinapor argued the debt in question has been accrued in the energy sector as a result of the incompetence of PDS.
John Jinapor believes PDS has failed to properly manage the financial and technical aspects of the energy sector causing an outstanding debt of about US$300million in the process.
PDS has in a statement denied owing the Independent Power Producers US$300million as at June 2019 for which the former has served notice to government through the Ministry of Finance to demand that the former releases funds to pay all outstanding debts.
The Yapei Kusawgu MP says the IPP’s threat to shut down their plants if they are not paid is adequate notice for Ghanaians to expect intense power outages in the coming weeks if the PDS remains defiant and refuses to admit and clear its indebtedness.
He also found it disturbing that PDS is yet to get the expected capital injection promised under the concession agreement describing it as a violation.
“It is curious, mind-boggling and alarming to note that PDS has so far not injected the needed financial capital as stipulated under the concession agreement.”
