Global human rights advocacy group, Amnesty International has petitioned the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice to investigate the sad tale of murder suspect Gregory Afoko’s detention, four years after he was arrested.
The High Court on Monday July 15, 2019 affirmed the continuous detention of the suspect and overturned a bail granted Gregory Afoko some three months ago by another High Court.
This despite the disrespect shown to the High Court by Attorney General’s Department and the Ghana Police Service.
The IGP David Asante Apeatu and his men with the backing of the Attorney General refused to release Gregory Afoko after the High Court notified the police that his bail terms have been met.
In a petition dated July 16, 2019 addressed to the Commissioner of CHRAJ, Amnesty International said the human rights body needs to uncover the reason for the refusal of the police to honour the bail arrangement of Gregory Afoko.
The group believes such an investigation should also deal with the question of whether Gregory Afoko’s right to bail has been violated.
Based on the outcome of the investigations, Amnesty International is further demanding that CHRAJ “Make such recommendation(s) as to the compensation(s) appropriate to such violation(s) (if any) and measure(s) to prevent such occurrence(s) (if any) in future.”
The petition signed by Director of Amnesty International Ghana Robert Akoto Amoafo also fingered the Inspector General of Police David Asante Apeatu and Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah as the key persons that should be investigated at the Ghana Police Service.
Amnesty International also wants the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General to be investigated.
The ministry is currently defending the IGP and CID Boss against a contempt charge at the High Court due to the refusal of the two to release Gregory Afoko.
